Lee chesneau's 2-day marine weather class - level 1
Learn the essential first steps to self-reliance and independent decision-making in weather forecasting, route planning and heavy weather avoidance from Lee Chesneau’s Classroom. This Class runs for two days, Saturday, Sept. 15 & Sunday, Sept. 16, 8am-4pm. Located at 250 Thames Street, 3rd floor (across from the Show site.) Lee Chesneau’s Marine Weather – Level I
Saturday and Sunday, September 15th & 16th (2 –Day Course)
Location:
250 Thames Street, 3rd Floor, Newport, RI (across from Boat Show site)
Day 1 - Saturday
8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
1. Introduction & Weather Map Discussion
2. Overview of how weather works: The atmosphere and principles of how clouds form; observing cloud types and what they mean to a mariner.
3. Basic review of pressure and wind concepts.
4. Global pressure and wind patterns
5. Air masses
6. Homework assignment (read Storms & Fronts article (provided)
Day 2 - Sunday
8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
1. Weather Map Discussion
2 Review of key points from Day 1
3. The surface weather map: An overview of surface weather systems (lows, fronts, and troughs; highs and ridges). Warning labels and wind barbs and other surface chart symbols as depicted on Ocean Prediction Center (OPC) and National Hurricane Center (NHC) Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch (TAFB) marine surface weather maps.
4. Local weather phenomenon (Emphasizing the Gulf Stream and Gulf Stream North Wall events (for the east coast); Puget Sound Convergence Zone, Santa Anna Winds, & Tehuantepec episodes (for the west coast).
5. Navigating for your weather information; where to access weather information while at sea from the public domain.
6. Map Discussion
Reinforcement review questions and application exercises will be administered to ensure that the objectives of surface marine weather charts are properly interpreted and read. Review handout material that will be provided at the end of the session to compliment notes taken as well as reinforcement exercises.
Each participant will be issued a “Certificate of Completion - Level 1” which will automatically qualify them for the Level 2 Course.

$395 (includes course book and handouts, plus two tickets to the Newport International Boat Show.

Instructor Bio
Lee is a highly seasoned professional meteorologist with experiences on land & at sea (with over 70,000 miles under his keel), a retired naval officer, accomplished marine weather forecaster, author, & dynamic instructor and lecturer. He has an ongoing distinguished and unique 40-year career, during which he received a number of awards and recognition.
Lee’s career includes service with the US Navy, the National Weather Service (NWS), & with the private sector, specializing in maritime weather forecasting & ship routing (the later from war ships, commercial fishing & merchant vessels, to recreational cruising and sailboat racing). Lee is also is a published author (Heavy Weather Avoidance, Paradise Cay, Oct 2008), and has written numerous articles in trade publications. He is a key speaker at a number of Safety at Sea Seminar (SASS) Symposiums, marine trade, & boat shows.
As a certified approved U.S. Coast Guard instructor for 5 maritime schools, he teaches Standards Training Certification & Watch-Standing for Seafarers (STCW) for Basic and Advanced Meteorology 5-day courses (each) to professional merchant mariners, and makes the same material available and tailored to the commercial fishing & recreational communities as well.
Today, Lee’s main focus is educating and training every seagoing mariner on self-reliance for their own marine weather & forecasting, strategic routing, emphasizing prudent decision making. He has his own company Lee Chesneau’s Marine Weather.
